A personal preference is not a prejudice - all gay men could be branded mysoginists if it were - but the way that preference is expressed in public can show a lack of sensitivity and a lack of respect for other human beings.

The words "No black dudes" is definitely offensive, particularly as the original poster puts that as the first item on his list of criteria. If you have that particular preference and you feel the need to express it, then something like "only white guys please" is a lot less inflammatory. I think to a black guy it would be a lot less 'IN YOUR FACE' than something that sounds like a throwback to pre-civil rights US or the apartheid era.

Even better, say nothing at all. If a black guy contacts you just say "Sorry, you're not my type."

Yes, IronbullUK, I agree that this is SUPPOSED to be a site for fighting, not sex, but this particular individual is explicitly looking for someone to sit on his face...

One of the things that surprised me when I first started wrestling with gay men was when someone - who I respected very much - said "I'd never wrestle a black guy, I don't fancy them."

For me that throws into question the whole DEFINITION of the word "wrestling" ... But don't get me started on THAT one...!

My humble take on the topic is that everyone is free to choose their opponents based on whatever criteria they want.

Not wanting to wrestle people based on age, race, weight, forename or whatever is not ageism, racism, weightism or forename-ism. It is a preference. You can question the wisdom of having a narrow preference, but I am fairly certain that accomplishes nothing.

Now someone could come forward and say something like older people / black guys / heavyweights / people called John should not be wrestling at all. That would be bad, but you see the difference, right?

Personally I'd say not but in these "ist" times is it acceptable to say no-one over a certain age? Isn't that ageist?

I'm not taking a pop at anyone here; just discussing the point.

I appreciate persons who list preferences because it makes my job in finding a suitable match that much more efficient. I certainly would rather not contact a candidate that expresses a preference that I don't meet, than contact someone and then either get rejected, or get lied to, led on and flaked out.

I think that age has an objective element; i.e.experience and fitness (e.g. speed over strength). So ageism may conceivably be legitimate?

That's true but I can still understand why a young lad wouldn't want to wrestle an older man even if he was skilled and fit.

I don't understand why the colour of a person's skin would be a factor.

With that comment you've neatly shown what a minefield this area (personal preferences)can be.

It also raises the thorny question of the role of sexuality.

Given that the website is about fighting not sex is it really acceptable to have a profile or classified that says "no black dudes"?
