Does your gym charge you for ProMotion?!

charging for a belt promotion sounds bit like a joke - in my 12 years of bjj journey through all belts - I never heard of that or saw that... but for sure - everything is possible. Belts at my dojo are given yearly at a seminar. But 4 sure there re maybe some mac dojos - who try to make money out of any stripe.

In brazil, almost all bjj gyms charge for promotion. As Im training at a big one, the ProMotion event is huge. They rent a stadium tô make it. But its challenging because there are many ppl who dont have the money tô get promoted, even if they deserve it

Totally against paying for the promotion. And also against having to pay for the “team” kimono or gear.

The team has to be a family, helping each other grow. If a team/gym needs money, there are plenty of ways to make it without interfering the team growth (making merchandising, organizing seminars, camps…)

Once you feel part of the team you will buy their gis, sweaters, fans, seminars and whatever they throw, just to support them. But freely and happily.

The master and other black belts should have enough experience to evaluate if a guy is ready or not for promotion, not only technique or physically, but also psychologically.

And for that black belts have to spend some time rolling with them and knowing more of them, their flaws, game and thinking, and not everyone does…

I recommend you to find, if posible, another place, maybe smaller, but more familiar. Check if in your area there are social projects like the one from Cicero Costha.

Yeah! I agree with. Here in brazil almost all bjj gym has the team gi and they charge for promotion. Im training at a big one squad and the ProMotion event is made at a stadium with all the students from all gyms.
Im only concerned about ppl who dont have the money tô afford it even they deserve promotion and if Im really progressing tô be a blue belt

Our gym has initiated a fee for belt promotion exams (which I am opposed to) however, the fee does include an official certificate and the exams are in many ways like getting a private instruction from several high level black belts. As one of the examining instructors (I judge the take down techniques), I will often spend as much as a half hour or more critiquing and helping the student modify the techniques being tested. Other examiners do the same with other parts of the curriculum. The entire promotion exam takes about 4 hours, and the examining instructors are paid for their time out of the promotion fees.
The promotion ceremonies are usually done at a clinic with a BJJ world champion, although if a student can't make the clinic, then the belts and certificates are awarded during classes.

Its reasonable. I dont know why the fees are só high here because, What I know, you have tô do some positions they tell you tô do and then you receive the belt. I dont know if high level black belts come to help.

Hey guys!!!
I want tô know if your gym does charge you for belt changes. Im shocked that the local Im training charges promotion. They oblige you to take a virtual course which costs 200 reais and the graduation which is 350 reais. You have to Pay almost 600 reais (which is almost 100 dollars) tô be elegible tô change belt. I think this is insane!!!!

Yeah, you are right, it is insane and it looks like a MacDojo. You'd be wise to find another gym to train!

Seconded. Promotions are part of the sport. Requiring you to pay for a virtual class and then for graduation sounds like those you are running the place aren't actually doing their job in training you.
